Beijing Shanghai Xi'an Route Guide
How to sequence China’s classic first-trip triangle, divide your nights and choose the best rail connections.
Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai form China’s classic first-visit route: imperial history, Silk Road heritage and a contemporary coastal metropolis. Ten to twelve days is the comfortable range, with high-speed rail connecting the cities.

Use Beijing → Xi’an → Shanghai
This order follows a natural geographic line and creates a strong historical-to-modern story. It also avoids doubling back, provided your international flights can arrive in Beijing and depart from Shanghai.
Give Beijing four nights
Allow one arrival day, two central sightseeing days and one Great Wall day. Major attractions can require advance booking, so keep the sequence flexible around ticket availability.
Give Xi’an two or three nights
Use one day for the Terracotta Army and another for the city wall, Great Mosque and food. A third night reduces pressure if the inbound train arrives late.
Finish with three or four Shanghai nights
Shanghai works well at the end because its neighborhoods support flexible days and both airports offer extensive onward connections. Keep the final night near a convenient metro or airport route.
Check stations before booking
Typical high-speed journeys use Beijing West for Xi’an, Xi’an North, and Shanghai Hongqiao, but schedules vary. Confirm the exact station on every ticket and plan the hotel-to-station transfer separately.
Estimate your budget, build a packing checklist, then turn the plan into a route.
