China 7 Day Itinerary for First Time Visitors
A realistic first-week route combining Beijing and Shanghai with one efficient high-speed rail connection.
Seven days is enough for a strong first impression if you limit the trip to two cities. Beijing provides imperial history and neighborhood life; Shanghai adds design, river views and a softer final departure day.
Rules, fees and app features can change. Recheck official sources shortly before departure.
Days 1–3: Beijing
Use arrival day for a gentle hutong walk. Give the next day to the Forbidden City and Jingshan Park, then reserve a full day for the Great Wall. Stay near a useful central metro line and book major sights in advance.
Day 4: Beijing to Shanghai
Take a morning high-speed train from Beijing South to Shanghai Hongqiao. Keep the afternoon flexible for hotel check-in and a first walk through the former French Concession.
Days 5–6: Shanghai
Pair Yu Garden and the Bund on one day, then explore Wukang Road, Jing’an or West Bund museums on the next. See the skyline after dark without filling every hour.
Day 7: Departure buffer
Choose a local breakfast and one nearby neighborhood before heading to the airport or railway station. Leave generous time for Shanghai’s distances and confirm whether you need Pudong or Hongqiao.
When to change this route
If history matters much more than cities, spend all seven days around Beijing with a second day trip. If you prefer a slower trip, choose only Beijing or Shanghai and add a nearby water town.
Estimate your budget, build a packing checklist, then turn the plan into a route.
