How to choose a train, book with a passport, find the right station and board confidently.
China’s high-speed rail network is often the smoothest way to move between major cities. The journey itself is simple; the details that matter are choosing the correct station, booking with the right passport information and arriving with enough time for security.

Choose the exact station
Check the full station name, such as Beijing South or Shanghai Hongqiao, before paying. Compare the station with your hotel location and onward transport.
Understand train numbers and seats
G and D services are the main high-speed options. Second class is comfortable for most travelers; first class offers wider seating and more space. Compare departure time, duration and station before paying rather than choosing by train number alone.
Book with your passport
Your passport is tied to the ticket. Enter your name and document number exactly as shown, then carry the same original passport to the station. Save the train number, date, departure station and carriage offline.
Arrive 45–60 minutes early
Large stations function more like airports than small platforms. Allow time for the journey across town, passport checks, baggage security and finding the correct waiting area. Add extra time on public holidays and busy weekends.
Find your gate and board
Departure boards show the train number, destination, departure time and gate. Wait near the assigned gate and watch for boarding to begin. If an automatic lane does not read your passport, use the staffed channel.
Manage luggage and arrival
You normally keep luggage with you, using racks above the seats or larger storage areas near the carriage ends. Before arrival, check the station’s Chinese name and your onward route; a city may have several rail stations far from one another.
