Best Apps for China Travel
The essential app stack for payments, maps, taxis, trains, translation and bookings.
The right apps remove most of the friction from independent travel in China. Install and verify the essentials before departure, save critical details offline, and avoid loading your phone with tools you will never open.

Payments: Alipay and WeChat
Alipay and WeChat are China’s two major mobile-payment ecosystems. For a first trip, start by fully setting up one, linking an eligible international card and learning where its Scan and Pay functions live. Keep another payment method as backup.
Maps: Apple Maps or Amap
Apple Maps is familiar for many iPhone users in mainland China. Amap, also called Gaode, offers excellent local detail and public-transport information but may require more language confidence. Save your hotel and key stations before the day begins.
Taxis: DiDi
DiDi is the main ride-hailing option and can be accessed through its app or supported mini programs. Pin the destination carefully, compare the Chinese address with your booking, and use official airport taxi queues when ride-hailing pickup zones feel unclear.
Trains: 12306 and booking services
China Railway’s 12306 is the official train platform. Reputable travel-booking services can offer a more familiar interface. Whichever you use, enter passport information exactly, check the full station name and keep the confirmation offline.
Translation: prepare offline help
Choose a translation app that supports camera translation and offline language packs. Download Mandarin before departure and save a few practical phrases, your hotel address and dietary needs as screenshots.
Build a small, reliable app stack
Put payment, maps, taxi, rail, hotel and translation apps on one home-screen folder. Sign in, enable only necessary permissions, download offline content and test each app before you fly. Reliability is more useful than having every possible app.
