How to Get Around China Without Speaking Chinese

A practical transport system using saved addresses, translation, metro signs, ride-hailing and staffed help.

You do not need fluent Mandarin to travel independently in China. The reliable approach is to prepare destination names in Chinese, use visual transport information, and keep one translation tool ready for the moments when signs are not enough.

Good to know

Rules, fees and app features can change. Recheck official sources shortly before departure.

01

Save every key address in Chinese

Keep screenshots of your hotel, railway station and major sights with their Chinese names, street addresses and phone numbers. Show the exact text rather than relying on an English pronunciation.

02

Use metro systems visually

Major-city metros use numbered lines, color coding and station numbers, often with English on maps and signs. Confirm the destination station, line direction and exit number before passing the gate.

03

Book taxis with a pinned destination

Ride-hailing through DiDi or supported payment-app services reduces spoken negotiation. Compare the pin with your Chinese address, check the license plate, and message through in-app translation when available.

04

Prepare translation offline

Download a Mandarin language pack and use camera translation for menus, signs and machines. Save short phrases for dietary needs, directions and ticket help where you can reach them without mobile data.

05

Ask staff with context

At stations, hotels and airports, show your ticket or destination first and ask one simple question. A visible train number, gate or address is easier to solve than a long translated paragraph.
