Is China Safe for Foreign Tourists?

A balanced guide to everyday safety, local laws, transport, health, documents and emergency preparation.

Many visitors experience China as orderly and comfortable for everyday travel, but safety is broader than street crime. Foreign tourists should also understand local laws, document requirements, traffic, remote-area risks and the travel advice issued by their own government.

Good to know

Rules, fees and app features can change. Recheck official sources shortly before departure.

01

Start with your government’s current advice

Travel advisories vary by nationality and can change. Read the official advice for your passport shortly before departure, note any regional restrictions, and understand what consular help is available.

02

Respect local laws and sensitive areas

Carry the passport or a secure copy as locally appropriate, follow photography restrictions, avoid demonstrations and do not assume laws or enforcement work as they do at home. Tibet and some other areas can require extra permits or controls.

03

Manage ordinary city risks

Use licensed taxis or verified ride-hailing, protect payment codes and valuables, and be cautious with unsolicited invitations or deals. Cross roads defensively and watch for quiet electric bikes even when a pedestrian signal looks favorable.

04

Plan health and insurance

Buy travel insurance that fits your activities and includes medical care or evacuation where needed. Bring required medicines in original packaging and identify suitable medical help in major cities before traveling remotely.

05

Keep an emergency layer

Store embassy or consulate details, insurance contacts and a trusted person’s number offline. Separate cash and cards, keep your phone charged, and share a basic itinerary with someone at home.
