China Visa Guide for US Citizens (2026)

Do Americans need a visa?Yes

US ordinary-passport holders generally need a visa for a tourism trip to mainland China. A qualifying transit itinerary may instead use the 24-hour or 240-hour visa-free transit policy, subject to its route, port and permitted-area rules.

Tourist Visa (L)

A Tourist Visa (L) is the usual category when a tourism visit requires a visa. Work, study, journalism and other activities use different categories even when a nationality has short-stay visa-free access.
